Bank of America to Eliminate Overdraft Fees

Posted by Ashley Wilson On Apr - 23 - 2010

A recent proposal by the Federal Reserve Board would prevent lenders from automatically issuing overdraft fees when consumers surpass their debit limits.

One commercial bank is echoing this effort by eliminating overdraft fees on debit accounts this summer. According to a recent announcement, Bank of America customers will only be able to make transactions if they have enough money in their account. The company currently charges $35 for those who overextend their debit cards.

The bank’s Overdraft Protection plan will allow consumers to use another form of payment or funds from their savings or other accounts to cover purchases. Consumers will also be warned at ATMs if withdrawing a certain amount of cash would overdraft their account.

Will Utility Payments Help Rebuild Credit Scores?

Posted by Jessica Thompson On Apr - 22 - 2010

When you apply for utilities it’s very likely that the provider will check your credit and a version of your credit scores called a Utility Score. If your credit is good (or better) then you’ll likely be enjoying warm winters, cool summers and bright evenings. If your credit is poor (or worse) then you’ll still enjoy the same things, but you’ll be a little lighter in the wallet because you’ll be asked to put a deposit down with the provider.

The question is: Will these accounts, and similar others, help you to establish, build or rebuild your credit and credit scores? The answer, unfortunately, is no. Utility companies and cellular phone providers do not report to the credit bureaus the same way your auto lender, credit card issuer and mortgage lender do. Some would even argue that utilities are not a form of credit, a theory with which I disagree because rather than lending you money they’re lending you gas, power or telephone services.

Democrat Solutions? Republican Solutions? Let’s have both.

The President’s speech was a lot like the Dodd and Frank bills themselves. To the extent one believes that regulators numbering, practically speaking, in the dozens for any one of these giant firms, can actually get a firm grasp on what the megabanks are doing, what they own and what they owe, or reliably distinguish risky and reckless practices from safe and sound, then the President’s vision has a chance of succeeding. We certainly don’t want to get in the way of his trying. By all means, give the regulators the tools they ask for and let them do their best.

It’s just that there is so very little evidence that they can succeed. The glaring and disheartening truth is that last time round the regulators endorsed and often required every one of the practices that led to the crisis. Even the

Improving Margins Prove Profitable for M&T Bank

Posted by Emily Robinson On Apr - 19 - 2010

M&T Bank’s (MTB) first quarter earnings of $1.23 per share left behind the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 97 cents per share. Earnings more than doubled from 59 cents per share earned in the prior-year quarter, aided by an expansion in net interest margin coupled with lower credit costs.

Net interest income (NII) came in at $562 million, up 24% year-over-year. The growth in NII was primarily due to a 59 basis-point expansion in the net interest margin, which improved to 3.78% from 3.19%. This improvement, which is steady from the past several quarters, was attributed to a higher level of average earning asset, coupled with lower rates paid on deposits and borrowings, and continued inflow of non-interest-bearing deposits.

Non-interest income increased 11.2% year-over-year to $258 million. T

The Biggest Threat To Your Savings Account

Posted by Jessica Thompson On Apr - 18 - 2010

The biggest threat to your savings account isn’t Wall Street. It isn’t your bank. It isn’t your utility bills. It isn’t debt, credit cards, gasoline prices, your stockbroker, your employer, your spouse, your kids, your bombed out car, your credit report, buying Christmas presents, cable television, health care, your car insurance, or even a lack of a budget.

The biggest threat to your savings account isn’t your student loans, your fat mortgage, your friends, jury duty, your tax rate, your IRA contributions, going to the movies at the theater, failing to buy in bulk, overlooking a hot ETF, too many books, not enough books,or going out for a few drinks this past weekend. It isn’t

The Path From Visitor To Sale

Posted by Erin Johnson On Apr - 18 - 2010

Misconceptions concerning affiliate marketing are appealing as well as attractive, however quite a number of people are given to thinking that it is something that’s capable of giving them great fortune quickly.

It is true enough that affiliate marketing is quite profitable, however people who have gone through all the hurdles to succeed in this business actually reap the seeds that they untiringly sowed. Most of them enjoy the kind of existence which wasn’t possible for them to possess in a normal situation.

The next is that marketing affiliates make the error of stuffing their sites with advertisements which don’t provide enough information about the product at hand. The best way to battle that mistake is to give decent written material hand-in-hand with those advertisements. It’s

Prime Cymru accuses WAG of ageism over SkillsCymru publicity

Posted by Erin Johnson On Apr - 16 - 2010

The Welsh Assembly Government has rejected claims that older people are being excluded by the marketing of a skills and careers event due to take place later this year.

Terry Mills, the chief executive of Prime Cymru, has criticised the Assembly Government over its treatment of older workers and jobseekers in advertising the three-day SkillsCymru event to be held at the Millennium Stadium in September.

But a spokesman for the Assembly Government said: “The over-50s have always been a key part of our target audience.”

The event is aimed at “skill-seekers from 14 years old to those in their 60s”, but the images currently on the website are predominantly of younger people in their 20s and 30s.

SkillsCymru is part of a major push by the Assembly Government, with European Social Funding, to assist the country’s economic recovery by equipping the population with skills.

Visitors to the event, which was announced by Carwyn Jones in January, will take part in interactive demonstrations of various disciplines including engineering, construction, retail, hospitality, cookery, sport and fitness.

But Prime Cymru, the charity established to help the over-50s become and remain economically active, said the advertising of the event would not appeal to older people in the jobs market.

Mr Mills said: “Once again, older workers and jobseekers are being ignored. There are 1
