Did you know that the energy needed to heat the water in your home creates the second (2nd) largest demand (after heating and cooling) for energy in your home?
Below are just a few simple and cost effective ways that you can use hot water as efficiently as possible:
- Install “low-flow” shower heads and faucet aerators. These can reduce water consumption by up to 50%.
- Turn off the water in between activities such as brushing teeth or washing dishes in the sink.
- Clean debris from the bottom of the area near your water heater and follow the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance.
- Consider installing a more efficient unit. Today’s water heaters are generally better insulated and have heat traps installed on them to reduce the amount of heat loss.
These are just a few ideas to help you conserve your water usage and lower your water heating cost. For additional information on water heating and consumption, visit Energy Star online at www.energystar.gov
