Government Advisor Professor Tanya Byron claimed that a national safety strategy is needed to ensure that youngsters are not allowed to access inappropriate content.
In order for mobile phones to be better regulated, the Council for Child Internet Safety needs to up its game, Professor Byron stressed.
She stated: “We have achieved a lot but there is a lot more to be done. The big take-out message from my report is: we have got to speed up to stay ahead.”
With an increasing number of underage children using social networking sites and Wi-Fi enabled mobile phones, this must be achieved sooner rather than later, she emphasised.
Ofcom recently released details of a new study which found a significant number of people between eight and 13 years old have Facebook, MySpace and Bebo profiles.
