Wally Weitz released his Q4 letter to shareholders and detailed some of his holdings. For those of you not familiar with Weitz, he’s known as that other guy from Omaha. He’s averaged more than a 12% return annually for the past 25 years. He’s the founder and president of Wallace R. Weitz & Company, which is a registered investment advisory firm that started with $10 million under management in 1983. It now has $3 billion under management. I always make it a note to read his quarterly letter and look through his holdings. His stock holdings are a good place to generate ideas.

Weitz notes that many of his holdings went from “dirt cheap” to “moderately cheap” as 2010 went on. He owns a collection of Liberty Media companies, which are John Malone’s spin-offs. Weitz owns Liberty Global , Liberty Interactive , Liberty Capital , Liberty Starz , Discovery Communications , and Ascent Media . Two I’d like to

Many of these tax mistakes are easily avoidable if you use Turbo Tax or H&R Block to prepare your taxes. I’ve personally used H&R Block for 12 years … this year will be my 13th. I’m planning to do my taxes this year with both sets of software, just to see if one works better for me. I’ll be sure to report my findings.

It’s easy to make a lot of these tax mistakes. We’re busy and our lives are taxing enough already (pardon the pun). When tax time rolls around, we can get in a big hurry to get it over with and in our rush, make a few mistakes. Here’s a list you can reference to make sure you don’t delay your refund or wind up paying penalties, interest, or fees.

1. Failing to report forgiven debt as income. Companies that cancel debt report it to the IRS on Form 1099-C and you’ll have to pay taxes on it.

2. Failing to report

Search Engine Optimization is the ultimate tool for creating traffic to your web site, though advertisements also help in doing the job. From a certain perspective, the preferential treatment that certain sites get would seem quite paradoxical. The best-written article on the web, on any given subject, would be completely ignored, if it were not tailored by proper Search Engine Optimization. At the same time, a badly done article on the same subject would be in the top of the list if it were molded to satisfy SEO requirements. The surfers actually become losers here by not being able to access a scholarly article.

Nobody has the time or patience to click on the thousands of hyperlinks a search engine would return in answer to their query, till they find the right article on a subject or the right web site for a product.

Lately my wife has been complaining about the awful smell of home cleaning products. I agree with her; the harsh chemical smell is off-putting. So I bought a book called Make Your Place, by Raleigh Briggs, which has recipes for nice-smelling cleaning solutions, as well as skin care products, and home health remedies.

After deciding on the products I wanted to make – window cleaner, soft scrub, and all-purpose cleaner, I went online and ordered all the necessary ingredients and equipment: funnels, plastic squeeze bottles, spray bottles, vinegar, borax, castille soap, baking soda, and oils of peppermint, tea tree, lavender, and eucalyptus. Most of the ingredients were inexpensive, except the oils, which were quite costly. Fortunately, the recipes called for just a few drops of the fragrant oils. A
